In 1644, during the Civil War, York was besieged by the Parliamentarians. Prince Rupert, and an army of 15,000 men lifted the siege. At at the Battle of Marston Moor of Rupert's 15,000 troops, 4,000 were killed and 1,500 captured. On July 15 the city surrendered to Sir Thomas Fairfax.
